According to the San Diego Ammo Store team, the cartridge world is changing. We’ve seen bullets get longer, cartridges get smaller, and overall people’s attitudes change. Why is this? Let’s take a closer look.
The modern cartridge family began with the 6.5 Creedmoor. That may be oversimplifying it a bit, but it is still a good place to start. The 6.5 filled a hole in the gun world, it was able to offer an unprecedented trajectory from an AR-15 ready cartridge. Once the gun world saw how well the cartridge performed, it was assimilated into bolt guns. The accuracy was amazing and the twist-rate allowed for amazing performance downrange. However, the true beauty of the Creedmoor is its lack of recoil in combination with the downrange performance.
The low recoil, long-bullet combination was again used for the 6mm Creedmoor. These new cartridge designs were created with the AR magazine as the limiting standard for length and thus required a short case to leave room for the long bullets. Regarding downrange performance, these cartridges have moderate velocity, but that really isn’t a handicap because, when combined with sleek bullets, they offer hours of action without tearing up the shoulder.
If you are considering distances exceeding 1,000 yards, the cartridges aforementioned will do the job, but do designs exist that would do better, even if that meant a bit more recoil? Well, yes and no.
The .22-250 would no doubt launch bullets better than the .224 Valkyrie or the .22 Nosler, but there are a few limitations. First to consider is the twist rate, which is .22-250 rifle is at best 1:12 and has difficulty stabilizing any bullets heavier than 60 grain. Second, you will certainly encounter problems with the magazine length when trying to properly seat long bullets. Even the .300 Winchester-Magnum, which is capable of traveling at a great velocity and has amazing accuracy has a problem with .30 caliber bullets with high BC and keeping overall length which would allow the cartridge to work properly in the magazine.
